How to Choose an EA for Gold (XAUUSD): 7 Things to Check

Gold moves fast and punishes mistakes. These are the points we check before running an EA on XAUUSD.

Gold (XAUUSD) is one of the favourite markets for Expert Advisors: it has good liquidity, wide moves and very distinct sessions. That same volatility means a poorly chosen EA can wipe out an account in a few days. Before you switch on any robot on gold, check these seven points.

1. Real track record, not just a backtest

A backtest shows how the strategy would have performed in the past with ideal data. What matters is how it behaves on a live account, with variable spread, slippage and real broker execution. Look for accounts with independent tracking (for example Myfxbook with track-record verification enabled) and at least several months of trading.

2. Maximum drawdown and how long it lasted

Profit alone says nothing. Look at the maximum drawdown: how far the account fell from a peak. An EA that makes 10% a month with a 60% drawdown is far more dangerous than one that makes 3% with a 12% drawdown. Also check how long it took to recover.

Rule of thumb: if you could not stomach seeing your account fall twice the historical drawdown, the risk is too high for you.

3. Strategy type

  • Trend / breakout: few trades, small losses and large wins. Losing streaks are normal.
  • Scalping: many short trades. Very sensitive to spread and execution speed.
  • Grid or martingale: a very smooth curve until the market moves hard against it. Needs strict risk limits.

There is no “best” type; what matters is knowing which one you are using and which scenario hurts it.

4. Spread and account type

On gold the spread can vary a lot between brokers and sessions. A scalping EA that works with a 15-cent spread can lose money with 40. Use a raw or ECN account when the strategy trades short targets.

5. Lot size and risk per trade

One standard XAUUSD contract is 100 ounces: a 1-dollar move in price is 100 dollars per lot. Size your lot from the percentage of the account you accept to risk. You can do it with our lot size calculator.

6. Behaviour around news

Gold reacts strongly to US data such as NFP, CPI or Fed decisions. Ask whether the EA has a news filter or whether it should be paused at those times. Check the market news.

7. Support and transparency

A good provider explains the general logic of the system, the recommended settings and the risks, and answers your questions before you start.

Conclusion

Choose an EA for its live behaviour and for a risk you can tolerate, not for the highest return. Start with small capital or on demo, and scale up only once you understand how it behaves.
